Drop in on Saturday, Oct 19 from 10 a.m. to noon and help remove an invasive plant known as Common buckthorn in Bechtel Park. Removing invasive plants and re-planting with native species, helps establish healthy habitat for pollinators like bees and butterflies!
The City of Waterloo’s Pollinator Working Group will be on hand to give you a tour of our wildflower plantings since 2021 and create awareness about our pollinator friends.
Learn how to identify common buckthorn, an invasive non-native shrub/tree and various management techniques. In this project area, we will focus on a new technique - Critical Period Cutting, using loppers and hand pruners. We will also use extractigators (weed wrenches) and shovels to hand remove small buckthorn.
Drop in during the event or sign-up in advance using our online participant sign-up form no later than 12 pm on the Friday before the event.
Need to know information:
During events, city staff provide direction and supply hand tools and cloth gloves.
Bring your own bottled water. Participants must wear closed-toe footwear, long pants and cloth gloves (provided or bring your own).
Moderate physical activity is required such as bending, lifting, pushing and walking on uneven terrain within natural areas.
This activity is appropriate for youth ages 14 and up, who must be supervised by a parent or adult guardian.
This event runs rain or shine (will be cancelled in the event of severe weather).
This event is located within Bechtel Park, directly across from Bridgeport Public School off Bridge St. Parking is available in the park at the Leash free park lot. Across from the tennis court, head south along the mown path. At the top of the sloped hill, you will find our wildflower plots in the south-east corner.
